The Original Ollies
After their emigration from Yorkshire, England to Canberra, Australia in 1955, the original Ollies, Albert and Edith Oliver, opened a Caltex Service Station on Yass Road in Queanbeyan. This was the very first business in the eastern industrial area of the town. Their boys Phillip, Ian, and Allen had an idyllic life, free to enjoy the freedom of exploring the bushland and paddocks that surrounded the service station. They all started tinkering with cars from their very infant ages, igniting the start of a lifelong passion for everything relating to motor vehicles.
Continuing the Passion
Eventually, the boys found a way to combine their love of old cars and fundraising. The three brothers immersed themselves in Variety Australia, the children’s Charity forChildren in need. They were in their element ‘Bush Bashing’ through rural and outback Australian towns. The drives were not only satisfying on a personal level for the car enthusiasts, they loved the joy they saw on the spectators faces and the difference the fundraising made to disadvantaged and/or disabled children.
And The Collecting Began
Following Ian’s ‘semi’ retirement in 2004, he decided that the next logical step in his motor vehicle ‘obsession’ was to start collecting. This idea soon grew into a very serious activity, with cars occupying most of Ian’s time. It wasn’t long before the purpose-built home garage became too small to house the growing collection.
For Show and Charity
So that enthusiasts could share their appreciation for classic motor vehicle brands, along with a desire to move the growing number of vehicles out of the home garage, and to support not-for-profits, Ian and Tina Oliver decided to develop a showroom inFyshwick. And so, Ollies’Garage was born.
Driving Community Support
The official opening of Ollies’ Garage is good news on many levels given that gross proceeds from entry fees, and donations will go directly to charity.‘Giving’ is a serious business for Ollies’Garage — registered charities and deserving causes close to ‘the Ollies’ hearts, such as the Sir Henry Royce Foundation, Variety, Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive,Classic Cruise, Camp Quality, the National Trust ACT
All will benefit from this passion.
